Ear Trumpet Labs Celebrate New York Theatre Workshop’s Twice-Extended Run of Hadestown
Collaboration Features Boutique Hand-Wired Microphones as Pivotal Staging Piece in the Folk Opera
NEW YORK, NY – American-made microphone company, Ear Trumpet Labs (ETL), congratulates the production of Hadestown on their stellar, twice-extended run at the New York Theatre Workshop, culminating July 31. Written by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and developed and directed by three-time OBIE award-winning director Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown follows Orpheus’ mythical quest to overcome Hades and regain the favor of his one true love, Eurydice. The critically acclaimed folk opera is set in the round, with minimal props, lighting and set design, allowing the dynamic presence of Ear Trumpet Labs’ vintage inspired microphones to shine right along with the cast.
ETL models, Evelyn and Edwina were selected for the musical due to their superior sound quality and stunning visual presence. On choosing the microphones, Mitchell notes, “We fell in love with the Evelyn and Edwina microphones for Hadestown because in addition to sounding beautiful, they LOOK beautiful onstage. The two-headed Evelyn has been so perfect for duet scenes - it’s one of the most important set pieces in the show!”
Sound designer Rob Kaplowitz expands upon his initial reaction to the microphones, “When our props designer Noah Mease found ETL's Evelyn, we all got very excited. I wrote notes to all my sound-geek forums, and heard universal praise for the sound quality of ETL mics, so we jumped in with both feet. As soon as I heard the Evelyn, I knew that for myself!”
Founder of Ear Trumpet Labs, Philip Graham, is delighted that his microphones serve a vital aural and visual component in the staging of Hadestown, “When people discover our mics they are intrigued by their design, but at the end of the day the sound quality is most important, and I believe that is particularly exemplified in Hadestown.”
Hadestown will conclude its twice-extended run at the New York Theatre Workshop on Sunday, July 31. A live cast recording of Hadestown has a pending release on a label within Warner Music Group, produced by David Lai and Todd Sickafoose, executive producers Mara Isaacs and Dave Franzen.

HADESTOWN
HADESTOWN follows Orpheus’ mythical quest to overcome Hades and regain the favor of his one true love, Eurydice. Together we travel from wide open plains where love and music are not enough nourishment to survive the winter, down to HADESTOWN, an industrialized world of mindless labor and full stomachs. Inspired by traditions of classic American folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz, Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and poetic imagination pit nature against industry, faith against doubt, and love against death. The production features scenery by Rachel Hauck; costumes by Michael Krass; lighting by Bradley King; sound by Rob Kaplowitz; properties by Noah Mease; choreography by David Neumann; dramaturgy by Ken Cerniglia; music direction by Liam Robinson; arrangements & orchestrations by Michael Chorney; and co-arrangements & orchestrations and music supervision by Todd Sickafoose. HADESTOWN is co-conceived by Ben t. Matchstick. HADESTOWN was originally developed with funding from the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center under the supervision of Dale Franzen and Mara Isaacs/Octopus Theatricals. The project was further developed in collaboration with The Broad Stage through NYTW’s Artist Workshop programming, including the annual Usual Suspects Summer Residency at Dartmouth College and the Larson Lab Studio. HADESTOWN is a winner of a Richard Rodgers Production Award, administered by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
