David Starr Releases New Single and Music Video “Cabo San Lucas”
8th Single and the First Original Song from Ongoing “Touchstones” Project
NASHVILLE, TN (June 17, 2021)...Americana singer/songwriter David Starr releases the first original song from his critically-acclaimed Touchstones project titled “Cabo San Lucas.” Premiering on American Songwriter, the song is a departure from the cover format of the rest of the album, and stands out as a summery tale that showcases Starr’s storytelling abilities. The video was directed by Jason Denton of Solar Cabin Studios and features Pacific views, fireworks, and Starr singing along in his Colorado studio. “Cabo San Lucas” is available now across all digital platforms.
Written at the very beginning of the pandemic, the song serves as an escape when, at the time, travel was out of the question. The choice to include one original on the project was intentional, Starr shares, “This song was written early on in the pandemic before we started recording for the Touchstones project. As we worked through the list of songs for the release, I just thought it fit with the others as part of the whole 2020 experience, if you will. After the year we all had, why not?”
The exotic landscape is one that Starr is familiar with, who chose to draw upon his own personal experience when crafting the story. “My family had a house down in Cabo years ago. I used to spend some time down there in my slightly wilder days,” Starr notes. “The idea for the song came from the notion that a romantic or exotic locale can be the thing that breaks your heart. Of course, there have to be people in the picture, but the location is the star of this song.”
The track features Starr on vocals and lead electric guitar, Mark Prentice on bass and keyboards, Matt Bubel on drums, and John Prentice on acoustic and electric guitars. Recorded in the beginning of the pandemic, Starr sent off a demo of the song to Mark Prentice where he framed out the track at his home studio before sending it back to Starr to lay down the final vocal and guitar solo.
Starr’s ongoing Touchstones project features a new digital release every month for one year. So far he has released his own interpretations of favorites such as “Drive” (The Cars), “Angel From Montgomery” (John Prine), “I’ve Got To Use My Imagination” (Gladys Knight), “Someone Like You” (Van Morrison), “These Days” (Jackson Browne), “Gotta Serve Somebody” (Bob Dylan), and “Every Kind of People” (Robert Palmer).
Touchstones was produced by David Starr and Mark Prentice, with co-production by David Kalmusky. All of the songs were mixed and mastered at Addiction Sound Studios in Nashville by David Kalmusky along with Ethan Barrette and Alberto Sewald.
